The full details

A new cooktop or range hood looks simple in the showroom. At home, it raises questions. Is the existing circuit big enough for induction? Is there power above the cupboards for the range hood? Does the oven need its own circuit? Flowstate Electrical Co installs kitchen appliances across Shellharbour, Wollongong, Kiama and nearby suburbs and answers those questions before anything is unboxed.

Customers have told us we fitted their range hood with a competitive quote given up front. That is how we prefer to work: you know what is involved before we start.

What is included

  • Electric and induction cooktop installation
  • Wall ovens, freestanding ovens and combination units
  • Range hoods, canopy hoods and integrated rangehoods
  • New dedicated circuits where an appliance needs one
  • Isolating switches so appliances can be safely serviced
  • Removal and disconnection of the old appliance

Signs you need an electrician for the job

  • You are swapping gas or ceramic cooking for induction
  • The new cooktop is larger or more powerful than the old one
  • There is no power point where the range hood will go
  • The oven and cooktop share a circuit that is already marginal
  • Breakers trip when the oven and cooktop are both on

Induction and your switchboard

Induction cooktops are popular because they are fast, efficient and easy to clean. They can also draw more current than the cooktop they replace. Many older Illawarra homes were wired with a modest cooking circuit, so a swap to a large induction unit may need a heavier cable and a new circuit breaker. In homes with ceramic fuses, it may be the moment to look at a switchboard upgrade. We check the manufacturer's installation requirements against your existing wiring and tell you clearly what is needed.

Range hoods

A range hood usually needs a power point inside the cupboard above or a hard wired connection. If you are moving from no hood to a ducted hood, the builder or cabinet maker handles the ducting and cabinetry, and we handle power. We also check that the hood's lighting and fan work properly before we leave.

How the job runs

Send us the model

Text the appliance model numbers and a photo of the current setup to 0424 400 346. With that, Kalani can usually tell whether the existing circuit will do or whether new cabling is needed.

Quote before work starts

You get a clear quote before the job. If the cabinetry is still being built, we can rough in the cabling at the right stage so it is ready when the benchtop goes in.

Install and test

The appliance is connected, the circuit is tested, and we check every element and setting works. We take away packaging if you want, and leave the kitchen clean.

Swapping from gas

Plenty of kitchens around Oak Flats, Albion Park and Figtree still cook on gas. If you are moving to an electric or induction cooktop, the gas side needs to be capped off by a licensed gasfitter, and the electrical side needs a circuit that suits the new unit. We can talk you through the order of trades so the kitchen is not left without a working cooktop for longer than it needs to be.

Ovens and freestanding cookers

Wall ovens are usually hard wired on their own circuit, and some larger freestanding cookers need a heavier supply than the unit they replace. Before you buy, check the installation manual for the required circuit rating and send it to us. A quick check at this stage avoids the frustration of a new oven sitting in the hallway while cabling is sorted.

Kitchen renovations

If the appliance swap is part of a bigger kitchen renovation, it makes sense to plan everything together: power points along the benchtop, USB outlets, under-cabinet lighting, pendants over the island and a circuit for the dishwasher. See our renovation and new home electrical page and our appliance installation page.
