The full details
Good outdoor lighting makes a house easier to come home to. It lights the path from the car, lets you use the deck after sunset, and gives you a clear view of the side gate at night. Done well, it also looks good and keeps working through salt spray, rain and wind.
Flowstate Electrical Co installs outdoor and security lighting across Shellharbour, Lake Illawarra, Wollongong, Kiama, Gerringong and Berry. Customers have told us about downlights we fitted inside and out on their new home, and garden lights we installed alongside power for a new pool.
What is included
- Sensor floodlights for driveways, side paths and back yards
- Deck, pergola and alfresco downlights
- Garden spike lights, step lights and path lighting
- Wall lights at entries and garages
- Lighting connected to smart switches or timers
- Lighting placed to work with security and doorbell cameras, with the camera apps set up
Signs you need it
- You use a phone torch to find the front door
- Outdoor fittings are rusted, cracked or full of water
- Your safety switch trips when it rains
- Dark corners along the side of the house or at the back gate
- Old halogen floodlights that run hot and use a lot of power
Choosing fittings for the coast
Salt air is hard on metal. Homes close to the water at Windang, Barrack Point, Kiama Downs and Gerroa can see cheap fittings corrode within a couple of years. We look for fittings with a suitable IP rating for where they will be mounted and materials that hold up near the sea, such as marine grade stainless steel or quality powder coated aluminium.
Placement matters as much as the fitting. A light under the eave is far better protected than one facing straight into the southerly. We think about where the weather comes from on your block before choosing a spot.
Security lighting that does its job
Security lighting works best when it covers approach paths without lighting up the neighbours. Sensor lights should catch someone walking toward the house, not every passing car. We angle and set sensors on site, then adjust them at dusk if needed. If you use security cameras, lighting placement helps those cameras pick up clear footage at night, and we can set up the camera apps while we are there.
How the job runs
Walk the yard
Kalani walks the property with you, ideally late in the afternoon, to see where light falls and where it does not. We talk about how you use the space: entertaining, kids playing, getting the bins out on a dark morning.
Plan the circuits
Outdoor lighting needs its own planning for cable runs, switching and protection. Underground cable is laid at the right depth and in conduit. Every outdoor circuit is protected by a safety switch.
Install, aim and test
Fittings go in, sensors are set, and everything is tested. We leave the yard tidy, with trenches backfilled and offcuts taken away.
Smart control
Outdoor lights do not have to rely on a switch by the back door. Smart switches and timers let you set path lights to come on at dusk, turn the deck lights off from bed, or switch the floodlight on from your phone when you hear something outside. We set up the app with you before we leave so you know how it works.
LED and running costs
Modern LED fittings use a fraction of the power of old halogen floodlights and produce far less heat. That makes them a better match for lights left on for long periods, such as path or deck lights on a timer. You can also choose warm or cool colour temperatures to suit the look of the garden.
